Aberdeenshire gets into the Olympic mood
Some shop windows in Fraserburgh have been transformed this month with the London Olympics capturing the attention of millions.
In Fraserburgh, some store fronts have been adorned in the Team Great Britain colours, while others have written messages of congratulations to Team GB.
Last week, Aberdeenshire’s own Tim Baillie, of Westhill, secured gold in the canoe slalom C2 event at the games.
Speaking on the success of the Aberdeenshire Olympian, Westhill Academy’s Head Teacher, Derek Thompson, said: “Staff and pupils at Westhill Academy are very proud of what Tim has achieved.
“We were all very pleased when we heard he had been picked for the Olympic team and are now delighted at the news that his hard work and dedication have been rewarded with a gold medal.
“It is a fantastic personal achievement for him, and I hope it will also act as inspiration for others at the school.”
The Chief Executive of Aberdeenshire Council, Colin Mackenzie, said: “This young man is a tremendous example to all young people, showing what can be achieved through commitment and tenacity.
“I am sure this win will encourage athletes of the future and others to participate in sport at all levels, which has got to be good for everybody.
“I am delighted for Tim and his family.”
Race partner Etienne Stott also received a gold medal for the race, while Aberdeen’s David Florence and partner Richan Hounslow won silver.
Slovakia’s Pavol Hochschorner and Peter Hochschorner won bronze.
