Mintlaw ‘doubling’ expansion plans approved

AMBITIOUS plans to double the size of a Buchan village won the backing of councillors last week.

An ambitious multi-million pound blueprint for the expansion of Mintlaw, including more than 1,000 homes, was shown the green light on Tuesday.

Plans for the new development, which were approved by Buchan area councillors at a committee meeting last week, were drawn up by consultancy firm Knight Frank, building firm Bancon Construction and Aberdeenshire Council.

A new primary school, business and health centres and other facilities are expected to be created to support the increasing population.

The village’s population, which currently sits at around 2,600, is excpected to more than double over he next decade.

Work on the expansion to the north and south of Mintlaw is expected to create hundreds of jobs, with Banchory-based Bancon Developments already having submitted plans for a business park.

It is expected that the development could create up to 500 local jobs.

The business park will cover approximately 12.5 acres in the south east corner of the masterplan area, and would take access from a new roundabout on South Street which runs towards Ellon.

It is thought the new park would incorporate a new business centre for start-up businesses of various types, two high quality office blocks and a range of small business units which could be sub-divided.

Also included in this area would be a bio-mass fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

Knight Frank partner Malcolm Campbell said: “The next stage of the process inloves lodging a planning application with Aberdeenshire Council. We are potentially looking to get this approved this year.”

The blueprint also includes upgrades to waste water infrastructure, road junction upgrades and waste management facilities.

Central Buchan councillor Peter Chapman said: “Bancon Construction and Knight Frank have realised that they are not in competition with each other. It is nice to see them working together to benefit the village of Mintlaw.”
