Employability for people with disabilities and health issues

Aberdeenshire Council has launched a new employability service to support adults with a learning or physical disability, mental health condition, or substance misuse issue.

The service is open to adults aged 16-65 and referral can be made through care teams or job centre schemes enabling access to an employability officer and support worker.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Social Work and Housing Committee Cllr Gurudeo Saluja said: “This new service will support people to gain new skills and support them to train for work and is part of the council’s commitment to providing employability assistance to vulnerable groups.”

Vice chair Cllr Carl Nelson added: “The new service is more than just a job search. It will help people to train for work and build their confidence and skills.

“This will contribute to a full time position or volunteer role and will make such a difference to many people who need support.”

The employability service will provide options from paid employment, voluntary work, training, workplaces, self employment or the Workchoice programme.

All of the options available will support people depending on their individual circumstances whether it’s someone looking to gain new skills, contribute to a worthwhile project or progress to a permanent role.

Employability service workers will be based in Banff, Fraserburgh, Peterhead, Ellon, Inverurie, Stonehaven and Banchory.

A closer working relationship with care teams to support people in employment is a key strategic aim of the new service.Find out more information about the employability service at hswemployability@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
