Commuters to benefit from road schemes
The North East will benefit from an £8 million cash injection into two key transport schemes as a part of a wider package of transport investment for Sctoland, it has been revealed.
Transport Minister, Keith Brown, confirmed funding to start construction at Inveramsay Bridge on the A96, and to take forward design work for the A90 at Haudagain.
The Haudagain roundabout, Aberdeen, is known to be a particularly bad junction for commuters in the mornings and evenings as commuters travel to and from their place of work.
Mr Brown said:
“Today’s announcement of budget allocations will see investment of nearly £72 million in our transport infrastructure right across Scotland.
“We recognise the enourmous role that Scotland’s strategic road network plays in to improving journey times, relieving congestion and making our roads even safer for our communities and businesses.
“That is why we are allocationg £8 million to two key schemes in the North East of Scotland.
“£5 million is being invested towards the £12-15 million Inveramsay Bridge on teh A96 to ensure that work on an improved structure can begin. This funding will go a significant way towards funding the construction costs for the scheme. While this is subject to completion of the statutory process, the works will remove the need for the existing traffic signals, move congestion and reduce delays for road users on one of the North of Scotland’s main arterial routes.
“We are also allocating £3 million to take forward at the appropriate time the deisgn work to improve the Haudagain roundabout. We recognise the effect this bottleneck has on commuters using the A90 and are delivering on our commitment to make substatntial improvements to the roundabout and reduce congestion.
“As we have said many times, we are committed to starting improvements at the Haudagain roundabout immediately on completion of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and today’s investment towards the Haudagain scheme will ensure we timetable the preparation work so that we are in a position to commence the improvements on completion of the AWPR.
“While we have no alternative but to await the resolution of the current legal appeal against the AWPR, the benefits of a completed AWPR coupled with improvements through the Haudagain roundabout will improve immeasurably the experience of road users both around Aberdeen and further across the North East.
“As efficient transport system is essential for enhancing productivity and delivering faster, more sustainable growth - even more important in these difficult financial times, so this specific investment for the North East today will help support this aim and ensure road users right across the North of Scotland begin to feel all the benefits that a high quality transport system will bring,” the Transport Minister added.
