Lighthouse museum to remain open

Having closed during last year’s winter season, the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses has revealed that they are in a position to remain open this season.
The Fraserburgh facility had been forced to close its doors for the winter for the first time in 16 years in 2011, following cuts to its funding.
Then museum director, Virginia Mayes-Wright, had revealed the necessary move to the Herald last year.
She said: “A funding cut like this means that we can not remain open throughout the year.”
Instead, the Lighthouse Museum closed in November last year until the Easter.
But new business manager at the museum, Gary Campbell, has revealed that the museum will be able to stay open over the holidays this year.
Mr Campbell said that everybody involved with the museum had worked hard to ensure that the museum was “fulfilling our remit as a vibrant, busy visitor attraction”, as well as undertaking their museum and conservational duties.
The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, which celebrates the 225th anniversary of Kinnaird Head on December 1, will operate at reduced hours during the winter.
In the lead-up to the anniversary celebrations, however, the museum will continue to play host to seasonal events and workshops.
Today (Thursday) and on Thursday, October 25, craft workshops are available for children from 10am till 11.30am priced £2 per child. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
A Halloween tour is also planned to take place on Saturday, October 27 from 7pm. Guides will lead tours around the museum’s oldest and, supposedly, most haunted parts of Kinnaird Head as you go in search of the lighthouse ghost!
Tickets for the Halloween event are £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and children. Interested parties are encouraged to book ahead of time as there are limited spaces available.
