The Scottish Maritime Academy at Banff and Buchan College, in conjunction with Technip Offshore Wind, has developed a bespoke programme for marine crew and barge masters.

The one week intensive course gives delegates an introduction to vessel stability and how it works; basic meteorology and how to analyse printed weather forecasts and an introduction to navigation techniques.

The first group completed the programme last month and all gained certification after successfully passing a competency assessment at the end of the week.

Ron Cookson, senior vice-president of Technip Offshore Wind Ltd, said: “Technip Offshore Wind Ltd was pleased to assist with the creation of a programme geared to advancing skills development within the marine renewable energy industry.

“This course was developed in-line with industry training standards and we are confident it will help to safeguard the provision of quality personnel for the sector in the long-term.’

Linda Hope, Scottish Maritime Academy Centre manager, added: “We are delighted with the feedback we have received on this course. We intend to roll out the course to other companies in the sector now that we have moved into the refurbished campus at Peterhead.

“The college would again like to express thanks to all our stakeholders and the Peterhead community for their considerable patience and support over the last two years during the refurbishment. We look forward to welcoming clients, old and new, from the fishing industry and beyond, to our purpose built venue.”
