Pick up a paperback
A new project encouraging readers to share their love for literature has been launched during an inaugural book festival in Aberdeenshire.
A collection of donated books are being distributed around local shops and businesses in Inverurie, as part of the Pick up a Paperback project.
The books are free to be picked up and read, and once you’ve finished, simply return it to a public place for someone else to enjoy.
A label on the inside of each book gives it a unique bar code to be tracked on a special website (www.bookcrossing.com) which will be used to record everywhere the book has been.
The project organisers – Inverurie Events, Aberdeenshire Council and The Philosophy Café – are appealing for books to be donated to help the project be a success. They will be distributed around participating shops and businesses for the project launch in October.
Good quality books can be dropped off to libraries in Inverurie, Kemnay, Kintore and Insch before the end of September. All genres are welcome, including both fiction and non-fiction.
It is hoped that the project will also encourage people to make better use of Aberdeenshire’s libraries, where a wide range of books are not only free to borrow, but free to reserve.
Businesses in Inverurie which are participating in the project include: Mitchell’s Dairy; Inverurie Garden Centre; JG Ross at Highclere, Garioch Community Centre; the Acorn Centre; The Gordon Highlander and Edwards. Look out for Pick up a Paperback signs in other shops and businesses in Inverurie as well.
The first ever World of Words book festival has been hailed by organisers as a success.
The festival, which ran a series of events from August 31 until September 7, was attended by hundreds of book lovers.
Special appearances by best-selling authors Stuart MacBride and Iain Banks proved to be extremely popular.
Other events –an evening with photographer Andy Hall, the launch of Inverurie Film Club, a Controversial Conversations events with The Philosophy Café, a Bookbug Rhyme Session and a Books and Roots session on heritage – also proved to be popular and were well-attended.
