THE second BRG Challenge takes place this Saturday with the organisers hoping to top last year's total of 143 participants.

The event, which sets people the challenge of either walking, running or cycling from the Broch, through Rosehearty to Gardenstown, is this y
ear aiming to raise money for FISSH, the local group campaigning to have a state of the art swimming pool built in Fraserburgh.

One of the event's organisers Michael Watt told the Herald:

"We are very excited about it.

"At the moment, we have more than 100 competitors signed up and registered. So we have a lot of people still to register who have committed themselves to undertaking the BRG Challenge. It was a great day last year, we are hoping the weather is good and we can break last year's total," he said.

Mr Watt said he realised that a fair number of people would be watching the weather forecast before finally committing themselves, but he urged them to come along anyway.

"If it is good weather on the day, we are hoping to push the numbers up to 200 entries.

"There is also the opportunity to enter the event as a relay team of four people, so that each person does just over four miles each. We think that this is a great way to be introduced to the event," he added.

There will be water stops at Rosehearty Square, New Aberdour and Middleton Farm, before competitors arrive in Gardenstown, which will be holding its annual Strawberry Fayre and Kipper Barbeque.

Last year, Ann-May Adams was the first walker home, with Charles Noble to the first male runner, and Gillian Strachan the first lady runner, while cyclist Billy Cowe won the two wheeled event.
