The Rotary Club of Fraserburgh is asking for donations of bicycles to be given to children in Africa.

A Rotary International of Britain and Ireland project ‘bikes4Africa’ is jole rider’s flagship programme in support of its mission: to change lives through education.

Many African children live in remote communities, a long way from their nearest school some walking for 20 miles. Without reliable, affordable, motorised transport the only way these children can get to school is to walk.

In searing heat, their journey is a daily mission.

Having a bicycle makes a world of difference for these children, and for their families.

The number of students at rural schools in Gambia who gained 5 or more credits

(entry requirement for university]) has more than doubled as a direct result of bicycle donations. Students at rural schools are achieving Aggregate Scores of 6 (top marks) for the first time in the country’s history.

The Rotary Club of Fraserburgh are appealing for donations of unwanted bikes to help this cause. Hybrid or mountain bikes best and narrow wheeled bikes are also execepted. Features of bikes that are sought are working gears, but only 3 gears is fine, no suspension is best as it is less maintenance and carriers or baskets are a great added bonus. The bikes should be in a reasonable condition with as little rust as possible.

Bikes can be donated by calling John Anderson on 01346 515291 or on his mobile 07711501071. Bikes can be arranged to be collected or dropped off and a £10 donation per bike is necessary for posting costs.
