Broch Gala Committee continue to gather pace

The Fraserburgh Gala Committee met again last night to discuss and set in stone further aspects of the returning Broch gala.

Following on from last week’s meeting of the gala committee, it is expected that many of the issues raised were further discussed with volunteers and committee members ahead of the 2012 gala.

Committee members have been hard at work over the past week, delivering posters to many businesses in Fraserburgh to highlight some of the events taking place in the Broch over the gala period, Thursday, August 16, to Sunday, August 19.

However, one of the events, ‘It’s a Knockout’ will not be making an appearance at the Broch gala, despite its mention in the poster.

It is understood that this is due to issues sourcing enough volunteers in such a short period of time before the return of the gala.

Similary, there will not be a marquee and the sale of alcohol will be limited to the inside of the Leisure Centre.

Gala-goers attending any of the days of the Fraserburgh Gala with a bag should be aware that they may be asked to reveal its contents as the Gala Committee takes steps to enforce the public drinking ban.

There will, however, be a concert featuring Target 5 as well as local bands and a DJ.

Ewan Masson, of Target 5, had told the Gala Committee last week that a company in Aberdeen had offered to provide a PA system for the weekend of the gala for a cost of £1200, an idea that was approved by the committee members present.

It was also decided that the bands would now play in the smaller hall of the Leisure Centre, with the option of moving into the larger hall should the demand require it.

A strongman competition and demonstration, as well as other related events, would also go ahead, with an expected appearance of Scotland’s strongest man, Stuart Murray,
expected.

Charlie Reid, who is organising a motorcycle and scooter show on the Saturday of the gala, announced online that forms for people wanting to take part in the show are now available via the ‘North East Scotland Custom Bike Scene’ Facebook page and can be emailed to fraserburghcustombike
andscootershow@hotmail.co.uk when complete.

The custom bike and scooter show is due to begin at 11am, with the public choosing the winners.

Similarly, Karen Gibson will be hosting a Zumba-thon event at the Fraserburgh Gala. The Zumba-thon will take place from noon ‘til 2pm. Adults can participate in the event for £10, with children able to participate for
free.

The possibility of pony rides was looked at in the previous meeting of the Gala Committee, with Wendy Buchan offering her ponies for the gala. This would be dependant on the weather and on whether or not the gala would be covered for insurance
risks.
