Gala committee meet to discuss potential event

Councillor Michael Watt has chaired the first meeting of the Fraserburgh gala committee, discussing witht the group potential events at the gala, and when best for the town to host such a weekend, should one be given the green light.
At the meeting, held last Thursday in the Council Chambers, business owners met with the councillor to give their views on how best to go about organising a Broch gala in the vein of popular, rural galas - the Invercairn gala, for example.
Councillor Watt, who informed the committee that he would step down as chair should they elect a member of the committee to take over the role, said that the committee would not dictate how interested parties get involved in any future gala, but instead act as problem solvers for any problems that should arise.
“The gala should pull the community together,” he added.
While discussing events that should be part of the gala, which included the return of a bay swim event, a talent show and sports, it was revealed that some local businesses had already declared an interest in sponsoring aspects of the gala.
One local business had told Councillor Watt that they would provide a trophy for a family golf tournament, the councillor revealed.
Other points discussed were whether or not to tie any gala in with neighbouring and annual events, such as the BRG Challenge and the Vintage Car Rally.
These were dispelled by the committee as not being viable, however, as they would threaten to overshadow events that had become part of the annual calendar.
Instead, the weekend of August 18 was decided as the best possible option for any potential Fraserburgh gala, with the schools closing for the summer holidays, ensuring that most people would be free to take part in the event.
The next open meeting of the gala committee is expected to take place tonight at 6:30pm at the Council Chambers, with further details of the gala being discussed.
