Broch Birthing Unit consultation
Maternity ward: MP Eilidh Whiteford and Councillot Brian topping are encouraging people to make their views known regarding the future of the maternity ward in Fraserburgh.
A NHS Grampian consultation was held in Fraserburgh last week to discuss new plans for maternity services around the North East.
It is proposed that the Fraserburgh and Aboyne Birthing Units would close as part of a plan to standardise care across the region.
They also aim to provide a service that is safer, more sustainable and will better meet the needs of women across Grampian.
Under the plans, three Community Maternity Units (CMU) in Aberdeen, Peterhead and Inverurie will replace the birthing units in Aboyne and Fraserburgh.
Local MP for Banff and Buchan Eilidh Whiteford, after a visit to Fraserburgh’s Birthing Unit said:
“This was a very useful visit and it was helpful to meet staff and see first hand the facilities that are currently available.
“The consultation highlights the shortcomings in existing provision and the limitations of the birthing unit. However, as we saw with the severe weather last month, Fraserburgh is some distance from acute NHS services and NHS managers have to take into account of the practical realities of our geography and climate when they plan services.
“It is very important that women who have used or plan to use the maternity services in Fraserburgh make their views known. It is only possible to build services around women’s needs if women speak out.”
