Latest results in for photographic society

The meeting of Fraserburgh Photographic Society held on February 7 was to hear the results of the 4th monthly competition.

The judge was Gordon Scott CPAGB who is secretary of Mid Calder Camera Club which is based in Livingstone. Gordon’s photographic interests are wide ranging but, particularly, landscapes, travel and sports especially cycling.

Gordon is holder of the Credit award from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. He said that he was looking for good technical work of sharpness, exposure and strong composition.

Beyond that he was looking for something that catches the eye, something shot from the best possible angle and a good use of colour, or use of monochrome where appropriate.

The top three images were:

• 1st, with 20 points: ‘Magpie’ by Stanley Partridge.

Gordon liked the diagonal composition of this well captured shot of a magpie. There was enough space in the frame for the bird to look into which he felt was important, the detail was good and there were no distracting elements in the background.

• Second, with 19 points: ‘Echo’ by Alistair Henderson.

This was described as a good simple image with lines in the white sand leading the eye to the tufts of grass showing though the sand and on to a fantastic sky. Gordon thought that this would work equally well in monochrome.

• Third, with 18 points: ‘Dingwall Canal’ by Paul Woodburn.

This tranquil scene had the house well framed by the greenery. The reflections were captured well and the light appropriate to the subject

The next meeting of Fraserburgh Photographic Society on February 14 will look at ‘Better Photography’ through a DVD. At the meeting on February 21, Graeme Buchan will judge the second print competition.
