Some of Scotland’s strongest men will compete at this year’s Broch gala for the title of ‘Fraserburgh’s Strongest Man’, the Fraserburgh Herald has discovered.

On Saturday, August 18, the strongmen will compete at Fraserburgh Leisure Centre. On the day, the competitors will be challenged to compete in events such as a log press, a tyre flip (which is a whopping 380kg), a van dead-lift until they break, an arm over arm pull of a truck that will weigh up to six tonnes, a dumbbell press of 70kg and the impressive atlas stones, which range from 125kg to 165kg, will be lifted over a yoke.

Stuart Murray from Dumfries will judge the events, a privilege for the competitors as he is a very well respected strongman and powerlifter, winning Scotland’s Strongest Man twice, British Strongest Man event and the UK’s Strongest Man.

He has also competed twice in the World’s Strongest Man and holds over 13 records in the Masters Powerlifting circuit, still competing in the competition today, aged 51.

The competition is being run by The Broch Iron Gym and will be sponsored by various companies. Steve Evans of Peterhead has also donated the use of some equipment to make the competition as impressive as possible.

The money raised will be donated to the Friends of Anchor cancer charity, which the organisers have supported for the past two years.

In the past, £2,400 has been raised and this year’s efforts will hopefully add to this thanks to the donations and support of local companies and to the inspiring display given by the athletes.

The athletes for this year’s competition will be arriving from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fort William, Peterhead as well as a few local heroes from the Broch.
