Five fantastic fundraising friends from Fraserburgh, Wendy Del Testa, Val Esslemont, Tina Gibbins, Eddie Paul and Cheryl Stephen have raised £62,050.90 over the last eight years for local charity, Friends of ANCHOR, which supports the Aberdeen & North Centre for Haematology, Oncology & Radiotherapy unit at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The group of ladies have held successful annual dinner dances at The Ban Car Hotel, Lonmay since 2004 and together with sponsorship money from a sky dive by Wendy and George Mutch’s marathon efforts they have raised this amazing amount. They chose to support Friends of ANCHOR as two of the group have had first-hand experience of the charity’s tremendous support of the ANCHOR unit and the others have all known close family members and friends who have had treatment at the ANCHOR unit.

On Thursday, May 26, the ladies, handed over a cheque to Friends of ANCHOR’s fundraising manager, Fiona JD Pearson, for the grand total of £10,200, this year’s proceeds from their dinner dance held earlier this year.

Tina Gibbins said: “We are absolutely delighted to have raised so much over the years for this very worthy cause which is so close to our hearts. Of course raising this huge figure wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our family and friends and so many local businesses and individuals who all gave so generously. So many people’s lives are affected by cancer we would like to encourage others to consider supporting Friends of ANCHOR, every penny counts and can and does make a difference”.

Friends of ANCHOR fundraising manager, Fiona JD Pearson, said: On behalf of Friends of ANCHOR we would like to thank Wendy, Val, Tina, Eddie and Cheryl so much for their tremendous efforts and congratulate them for raising this phenomenal amount for the charity. We know how much hard work, time and energy goes into raising funds, not made any easier in the current economic downturn, so to raise so much is marvellous.

“As Tina said every penny donated really does makes a difference and enables us to continue to extend and expand our support of the ANCHOR unit and its patients.

“It also allows us to continue to fund even more crucial cancer research at the University of Aberdeen’s Institute of Medical Science”.

Friends of ANCHOR was established in 1997 to support and raise funds for the ANCHOR unit at Aberdeen’s Royal Infirmary as well as fund vital cancer research projects at the Aberdeen University’s Institute of Medical Science at Foresterhill. It is a unique charity as every penny donated goes directly to the cause as administration costs are fully funded by their main sponsor, Balmoral Group.
