A local jewellers whose family have a history of business in the Broch recently celebrated his first anniversary since opening at 63 Cross Street.

Jay Sprigg opened Unique Jewels Ltd on August 31st, 2014 and offers custom made jewellery.

His grandfather owned and ran the popular James Donn’s Draperies for 40 years in the Broch.

That shop closed 20 years ago, but Mr Donn still has a hand in the local economy.

He helps out Jay’s parents toy shop that has opened during the festive season over the last three years.

Jay’s parent also trades as Toymaster in Ellon.

Jay began learning jewellery making 12 years ago at the age of 18.

He started a home-run business until the opportunity in the town centre presented itself.

Unique Jewels Ltd offers customers the chance to buy custom made pieces.

Jay said: “I am trying to do something different from what other big brand jewellers do.”

He added that people visiting the shop will see “local, hand-made jewellery at a reasonable price” because of the lack of middle-men involved in big chain stores.

The shop also specialises in ring re-sizing, something Jay says the bigger jewellers won’t do for fear of losing stones in the process, but as he puts it “a jewellers should be able to do that”.

He added that having a high level of customer service to the town’s people is important to him.

He maintains a strong online presence. Examples of his work can be found on facebook.com/uniquejewelsltd.com or his own website, uniquejewelsltd.com and enquiries can also be made via email at uniquejewelsltd@gmail.com.
