Successful start for Saplinbrae Hotel

The Saplinbrae Hotel, near Mintlaw, has received much support from local people in its first two months of trading.

The hotel re-opened its doors to the public in December last year under husband and wife team Noel and Joanna Gall.

The couple had already established themselves within the North East as the then proprietors of The Lodge (Strichen).

Joanna has a strong background in the hospitality industry, having worked at Ackergill Tower and The Dorchester before moving to Buchan in 2010 to get married.

Commenting on the first few months of trading, Joanna told the Buchanie: “We were very busy over the festive period and we expected to be quiet over January as is common in hospitality.

“Instead, we have been delighted to see no real downturn in our lunchtime trade or demand for dinner over the weekend.

“We have been consistently fully booked in the dining room and the lounge bar every Friday and Saturday since the middle of December.

“We have been humbled by the support of people in the local area - we cannot believe, for a new business, how busy we are!

“Due to this unimagined early success, we have hired more staff and now have a team of 35 working for us across our two businesses - Saplinbrae Hotel and the Café at Aden.”

Turning to future plans for the popular hotel, Joanna said: “We have a strong team in our kitchen who continue to please the Buchan area.

“We will, over the next few months, be focusing on improving our accommodation here.

“There are nine bedrooms in the main hotel, and we have two wooden log cabins in the hotel grounds.

“We want to promote the hotel, and the North East, as the ideal location for a leisure break.

“With beautiful rolling farmland and lovely beaches and coastal walks, we think that the North East is sadly overlooked as an area to spend the weekend relaxing and we want to change this,” she said.

“Our marketing manager is currently working towards forming links with several local golf clubs and leisure providers,

“We are hoping to have a very busy summer season here at Saplinbrae,” she added.
