Vandals have targeted South Park Primary School, damaging an eco-friendly garden project that was created by the school’s pupils.

Pupils from primary seven had worked alongside the school’s eco committee to build a willow tree dome and tunnel on school grounds, fixtures which were attacked.

Deputy head teacher at South Park, Carol Irvine, explains: “Last term, we planted live willow as part of our eco work to encourage biodiversity in the school grounds and to build on our resources for creating an outdoor classroom.

“The eco committee have been looking after it regularly, retying the willow stalks together, feeding in the growing bits, etc.

“It had just started to grow before the holidays, and we beginning to see the first shoots. Unfortunately, on Monday this week (April 28), our willow tunnel had been almost completely flattened over the weekend.

“Our children were very disappointed. Many of the bits were broken and will no longer be able to be used.

“It is especially disappointing as we just earned our second green flag and this work will go towards us earning our third green flag in a few years time.”
