Fraserburgh and district councillor Charles Buchan has hailed figures which show unemployment in Fraserburgh appears to be falling.

The figures, which the councillor shared with the Fraserburgh Herald last week, show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit has fallen over the past 12 months.

“In percentage terms, the falling unemployment in Fraserburgh is the same as in Peterhead (35%), with reductions in Aberdeen City, Banff and Huntly slightly less,” Councillor Buchan, a former science teacher at Fraserburgh Academy, told us.

In May 2013, he explained, there were 286 people in Fraserburgh claiming unemployment benefits. Figures for May 2014, however, show that this number has fallen by 102.

Meanwhile, the figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that there were 710 unemployed claimants in Banff and Buchan in May this year, a figure which had fallen by 365 from the previous year.

“The wage packets and salary payments of these 102 extra earners should contribute to increased spend in the town and help our economic regeneration.

“These unemployment figures also fit in with local growth figures, with the North-east economy still growing still faster than the UK economy,” the councillor added.

In June, local MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford had declared her happiness with falling unemployment in the area.

During a debate on the Queen’s Speech in Westminster, the MP for Banff and Buchan had said: “Few issues are more important than the availability of work, and I am therefore pleased to see another fall in unemployment in Banff and Buchan.

“Unemployment among young people, however, remains unacceptably high. In Scotland, the Scottish Government’s Modern Apprenticeship scheme has seen 77,000 young people gain an apprenticeship in the last three years, and thanks to the Opportunities for All scheme, every 16-19 year old in Scotland is guaranteed a work placement, training course or education place.

“However, the publication of the Wood Commission interim report on Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce highlighted the need for schools, colleges and employers to work much more closely together to equip young people for the workplace.”
