An Independent councillor in Aberdeenshire is joining the Scottish Conservatives in a move that will bolster the local party in the lead-up to May’s Holyrood elections.

Mark Findlater, ward member for Troup, made the announcement as a show of support for the Scottish Conservative candidate for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, Peter Chapman.

Cllr Findlater, a former soldier who campaigned for Better Together in the 2014 Independence Referendum, will now join the ranks of activists seeking to elect Mr Chapman to the Scottish Parliament.

Cllr Findlater said: “I stood as an Independent in the council elections in 2012 and it has been an honour and a privilege to represent the people in my area since then.

“More recently, Peter Chapman was selected for the Scottish Parliament elections in May. I have known Peter for years and I think he would make an excellent MSP for this area so I decided that I wanted to help him with his campaign.

“I soon realised though, that declaring support for any party candidate did not sit well with being an Independent Councillor so I have made the decision to join the Scottish Conservative Group on Aberdeenshire Council with immediate effect”
