Local lad, Craig Noble (18) is holding his first fund-raising activity in the hope of raising sufficient funds to enable him to return to Mombasa, East Africa as a volunteer teacher.
Craig has already taken two volunteer teaching assignments to the Precious Vision Care Centre, in Shari Yako, the second largest slum in Mombasa, paying for the trips himself. During his final week of his last teaching assignment at the end of May, Craig became severely ill and is believed to have contracted malaria.
Speaking to the Herald about his desire to return, he said: “I love working in the school and with the children, so decided to go back as soon as possible.
“My first fundraiser is a Quiz night at the Elizabethan on Saturday, hopefully there will be a good turn out. The quiz starts at 7.30 pm so I would encourage people to arrive at about 7.00 pm. Raffles will also be available throughout the evening.”
Craig’s volunteer teaching assignments are organised through Global Vision International, 70% of the fee paid by volunteers goes towards resources for the centre and 30% towards upkeep of the volunteer house.
