A young Fraserburgh dancer beat the competition to win big at the Cowal Highland Gathering (CHG) in Dunoon last week.

Jessica Morrison won the 15 years category in what has been described as the “centre of the Highland dancing world” during the event by CHG chair Ronnie Cairns.

Hosted at the Argyll and Bute town, the CHG is part of EventScotland’s National Events programme. Part of VisitScotland, EventScotland is working to make “Scotland the perfect stage for events by developing an exciting portfolio of sporting and cultural events to help raise Scotland’s international profile and boost the economy”.

The CHG ran from Thursday 27th to Saturday 29th of August, with Jessica winning her prize on the opening day.

As well as dancing competitions, CHG also included other activities such as a 5k Cowal Run.

Mr Cairns added: “Even a bit of wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of competitors and spectators.

“We had a packed schedule with something for everyone to enjoy, whether it be Highland Dancing, pipe bands, solo piping, heavy athletics, ceilidh music, running, stunt cycle teams, animal display teams, kids’ entertainment or any of the other attractions.”

The weekend also included what was described as the “biggest Highland Dancing competition on the planet” - the World Championship finals. ‘‘Dancers from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and the USA travelled to compete against the best talent in the UK.
