Former Fraserburgh Academy pupil is now working as an apprentice chemist with SGS, a world-wide inspection, verification, testing and certification company after completing a year-long science course at North East Scotland College.

Demi Elward (24), hadn’t considered studying science prior to researching the course options available at North East Scotland College and hadn’t taken any science subjects at school.

She had been keen to study social sciences but the Applied Sciences course description caught her eye.

She said: “The Level 6 course looked really interesting and wasn’t something I had even considered before so I thought I would give it a try. Everything on the course was new to me so I really enjoyed the challenge.”

As part of her job, Demi is involved with testing samples from offshore for the presence of particular metals.

Her employer has also enabled her to spend some of her week back at North East Scotland College studying HNC Applied Sciences on a day-release basis. She said, “I really enjoy studying science and would like to continue on to HND level in the future.

“I would highly recommend NESCol to those who are interested in science, even if you haven’t studied the subject before.”
