Fancy dress Easter party

A local girl is organising a fancy dress easter party at Fraserburgh Community Centre this Saturday (April 23) to help raise funds to enable her to travel to Peru to work in an orphanage for a year.

Wendy Smith told the Herald: “My friend is currently doing the Gap Year in Guyana, and she introduced me to it, it seemed really interesting so I decided to apply for the selection course in October last year held over in the Isle of Coll. After a week of tasks I got a letter saying I had been selected.”

“Basically I just want to help kids and show them that something positive can come out of being in a bad situation, as most of the children have not had the best of childhoods.”

At the end of August Wendy will be going to Peru, South America for a year to work in the local orphanages, teaching the children basic english and arranging extra curricular activities such as sports, art and music and introducing things into the community; as well as acting as a ‘big sister’ to the children.

The voluntary work is organised through a Scottish Charity - Project Trust, Wendy continued: “Project Trust was founded in 1967 as a registered charity on the Hebridean Isle of Coll in North West Scotland, they have sent over 5,500 volunteers overseas since then, to various places in South America, Asia and South Africa, doing various things such as teaching english, science and maths to social care and helping in the community.

“Project Trust sends around two hundred volunteers to twenty-five countries every year and is widely respected as one of the most experienced and professional gap year organisations in Britain.”

In order to be able to participate Wendy has the task of raising £4950 towards training, debriefing, expenses and medical insurance. Wendy added: “In order to raise funds I have done a bungee jump in February, there is the easter party this month and I also hope to do bag packing in addition to other activities between now and August.”
