As Scottish skippers and seafood exporters prepare for the International Skippers’ Expo at the AECC this Friday, May 30, figures released this week from the first quarter of 2014 have highlighted the strength of Scotland’s fishing sector.
A record number of industry exhibitors from Scotland and around Europe will descend on the AECC for the International Skippers’ Expo, which comes in a week where the Scottish fishing industry has demonstrated its continuing strength, with rising demand for Scottish salmon in Europe, North America and Asia driving export growth.
A new report from Marine Scotland and Highlands & Islands Enterprise also forecasts a 10,000 jobs boost for Scottish aquaculture by 2020 thanks to strong global demand.
Banff and Buchan MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford commented: “With demand for high quality seafood soaring around the world, the fish processing sector in Scotland is well placed to take advantage of growing opportunities.”
“Our fishing sector is already looking to the rest of the world and, with independence, we would be able to promote and market Scottish seafood more effectively in global and domestic markets.”
The International Skippers’ Expo takes place at the AECC on Friday, May 30.
A question and answer session on fishing and independence will take place with the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead at 12noon.
