FRASERBURGH swimmers and fun lovers could be making a real splash under new plans to bring flumes to the Broch!

The group behind the ambitious proposals - FISSH - is aiming to bring more visitors back into the town by providing first class facilities at the new multi-million swimming pool.

The pool and associated sports and community complex is on-track for a start date in early July, and with an expected completion date for late 2012 it provides an opportunity to capitalise on the town’s existing assets and attract visitors from throughout the area to utilise the facilities.

But it will cost - with FISSH estimating that a further £50,000 is needed by way of fundraising of the fun facilities will ever make it to Fraserburgh.

A FISSH spokesman told the Herald that to attract visitors to the area and provide locals with superb leisure facilities, they would like to see the new pool house a flume.

She said: “Our flume would be 40m, similar to the one pictured, with a single larger, faster loop and a more dramatic and thrilling drop down. Work on a final design to fit the space available is on-going.

“No longer will we need to travel into Aberdeen or Elgin to enjoy such facilities as it will be right here on our own doorstep and people will come from far and wide to the Broch to enjoy it too!”

The estimated cost of the flume is £120,000, and at present FISSH have about £70,000 in the bank, so a further £50,000 will be required.

In order to help raise the further funds FISSH have some exciting activities planned, but the group is also calling upon locals to start fund raising as well.

“FISSH are only the fund holders for the town although we have several events planned for the near future,” said the group representative.

“£50,000 is a tremendous amount of money and we are a very, very small organisation. We appreciate all the support we have received to-date. This has been fantastic and it is highly unlikely that we would even be seeing the new swimming pool, sports and community complex built without it.

“However, we really need other people within the community to organise events or raise funds for the flume, it is for the benefit of the whole community and will be for years to come.

“If you work for a company that has a charity fund why not ask if they would consider making a donation to FISSH? We will readily supply them with any necessary request/acknowledgements letters.

“We are now also able to claim Gift Aid on any donations made to the fund, if you are a taxpayer, this means that for every £1 you donate we can claim 25p from government funds, making your donation even more valuable without costing you any extra. How often do we get anything back from the government!”

Forthcoming events organised by FISSH include the Midsummer Ball, a super Fun Day and a Ladies night.

The representative added: “Our Midsummer Ball is on Saturday, June 18, everyone has a great night.

“The champagne reception, dinner and dance with fantastic raffle and auction prizes is sure to be a wonderful social evening.

“Our top auction item this year is to cut the “First Sod” on the construction site in July.

“If that’s not your thing we have a super Fun Day with lots of entertainment on Sunday, September 4 at Fraserburgh Community Centre and Academy Playing Fields to launch our “Splash for Cash” Swimathon Week, get your sponsors and get fit at the same time.

“If you don’t swim why not get people to sponsor your jogging, running, walking or cycling for the week!

“On November 18 we have a Ladies Night at the Leisure Centre complete with fashion show by M & Co, pampering sessions, stalls, disco and Bollywood dancers.

“Our annual quiz ison January 20, 2012 and in the next few months we will also be holding a “Name the Flume” fundraiser, the winner of the competition will be the first person down the flume on opening day.”
