Kirsty Bruce from St Combs walked away with second place in the Young Chef of the Year competition at the recent Grampian Chef and Restaurant of the Year Awards.

Kirsty, who is a commis chef at the Tufted Duck Hotel, St Combs worked extremely hard, and at just 16 years of age was the youngest not only in her category, but the entire competition. Proving she was worthy of the silver award Kirsty cooked a delicious three-course dinner during the morning at Aberdeen College and adhered to tight competition rules, performing skillfully under the strict scrutiny of the competition judges.

Many weeks of planning went into her menu and she was closely mentored by head chef at the hotel, Graham Smith, along with Robert Bruce, who also served his apprenticeship at the Tufted Duck when he left school. Robert, who many will know as one of the ‘Twa Fat Laddies’ cookery duo, said he was delighted with such a fantastic performance from Kirsty. She worked very hard and is very dedicated and was more than capable of rising to the challenge.

The competition entry criteria was to cook a three-course meal comprising local seasonal produce. Kirsty’s Menu comprised of a selection of Scottish Shellfish, roast cannon of lamb and baked vanilla and honey cheesecake.

Mr Smith said “Kirsty has done a fantastic job and I am very proud of her.”
