John Watt has graduated with an HNC in Administration and IT, a qualification he knows will stand him in good stead for his future career.
John, 18, from Fraserburgh, came to North East Scotland College after his fifth year at school. He studied Higher Administration at Fraserburgh Academy and as this was the subject area which interested him most, he decided to study it further at college.
Commenting, John said: “As soon as I started the course I felt right at home. We had a small class and everyone got on really well. The lecturers were great and the general atmosphere was just really positive.
“I felt much more independent being at college and enjoyed being responsible for my own learning experience.”
As the course progressed, John was made aware of a job opportunity which an oil and gas company had contacted the college about. He decided to apply and was successful in securing a part-time admin role with Viper Subsea, working two days each week whilst continuing with his HNC the other three.
He worked with the company right up until the end of his studies in June this year and was then offered a full-time position. Unfortunately, John decided not to take the position due to the travelling commitment of working in Aberdeen but has since taken up employment with a national pub chain in Fraserburgh and is enjoying working in the hospitality industry.
Going forward, John hopes to return to college to study social sciences and one day work in a social care setting. John added: “I would recommend North East Scotland College to anyone. It has been such a great experience for me and I have gained so many transferable skills that I will be able to use in a variety of different jobs.”
