£5,000 for sexual violence outreach

Aberdeenshire Council has awarded £5,000 of funding to an initiative that supports women and girls who have experienced sexual violence in Aberdeenshire.

Rape and Abuse Support (RAS) is based in Aberdeen and has set up satellite offices in Fraserburgh and Peterhead to support females living outwith the city.

Having been unsuccessful in a recent application for BIG lottery funding the future of outreach services and provision in Aberdeenshire was left in jeopardy.

The support group previously received 5,100 per annum from Aberdeenshire Council and the top-up now brings the total grant to 10,100. This will allow work to continue with those who have experienced sexual violence in Aberdeenshire.

Pat Wokoma, outreach worker at the organisation, welcomed the grant from Aberdeenshire Council and said:

"Rape and Abuse Support greatly appreciate additional funding supplied by Aberdeenshire Council. This money will enable us to sustain support to women in the north-east community for a further year.

"RAS is also mindful of the need for further satellite services in areas of Aberdeenshire. It is our intention to work toward developing our services to reach other areas and for more women to be able to access this valuable support. Since establishing our first satellite bases in Aberdeenshire in March 2008 we have supported 15 women."
