MATHS pupils from Fraserburgh Academy have topped the North-east heat of an Enterprising Maths events, beating another 22 schools from through the area to the top spot.

Teenagers from 23 schools from throughout Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City gathered in Aberdeen on 20th June to take part in this year's Enterprising Maths in the North East event.

Each school took part in five rounds of competition, which culminated in a maths relay race where Fraserburgh Academy won the day beating Harlaw Academy, Aberdeen, into second place.

The event is sponsored by the The University of Aberdeen And Tesco and was aimed at 13-14 year olds to encourage an interest in mathematics and its application in the world beyond the classroom.

Mr Jim Bovill, who assisted in running the competition, said: "We run the event to help pupils see the value of maths beyond the curriculum.

Not only is maths intellectually challenging but also it is used in all aspects of our everyday life. The aim of the event is that pupils and their teachers leave the competition with a renewed interest in the subject and the opportunities that studying maths can offer."

Mrs Gillespie, Teacher of Maths at Fraserburgh Academy said: "Congratulations to Our team on their well-deserved win."

The Fraserburgh Academy team will now make the journey to Glasgow for the final event in November.

Mr. John Noble, Acting Rector said: "We are delighted with this outstanding performance by our pupils under the leadership of our dedicated maths teachers."
