Academy students get TOTAL tuition

A DOZEN fifth year pupils at Fraserburgh Academy will attend a one-day workshop sponsored by Total today (Thursday).

The workshop is one of a series throughout the North-east being run in partnership with the oil and gas industry, which focuses on the 'industry ready skills' necessary for future employment but geared towards those pupils not planning on following the graduate route.

The aim is to focus on on providing young people with 'industry ready skills', building self confidence and bridging the skills gap between school and employment. The workshops fulfil several of the Scottish Government recommendations for 'A Successful Smarter Scotland' and also directly supports five out of six of the 'Determined to Succeed' objectives.

Such events hope to fulfil a series of aims including presenting an overview of the importance of the oil and gas sector and it's context; develop specific 'Life Skills' in order that pupils know and appreciate themselves as unique individuals and to motivate pupils to market themselves in the best possible way to prospective employers via a practical 'hands-on' workshop.

During the day there will be a presentation from and discussion with a representative from the industry sponsor about the oil and gas sector, their organisation and including information about how to apply for a position within that company. This will be given by Total's St Fergus Terminal manager Arthur Crawford.

Pupils will be given an individual psychometric profile – understanding yourself and others. There will also be a chance to learn how to construct a CV and write a covering letter with coaching from coaching and input from C-T-C (Coaching Training Consultancy), and the Total and using their template to actually produce their own CV.

Pupils can also learn interview skills including mock interviews and feedback from C-T-C and their partners and find out what to expect at an Assessment Centre through input and skills practice.

Phase 1 of the scheme was piloted in 2009, and a total of 60 pupils attended these workshops from five schools in the Aberdeen area.

A spokesperson for the event organisers said: "Following extremely positive feedback from pupils, teachers and Industry sponsors, we have now secured additional sponsors to facilitate the rollout of Phase Two across Aberdeenshire along with funding from DtS which will enable a further 20 workshops to be delivered.

"The workshops will be aimed at pupils who are not planning to follow the graduate route into employment. We will facilitate all schools liaisons, workshop arrangements, content, psychometric materials and appropriate certification.

"All C-T-C facilitators are accomplished and experienced in this area of work and also have Enhanced Disclosure Scotland status."
