Award for the late, great David Heddle

A paralympic bowler has been given a prestigious posthumous award.
David Heddle, who died in 2006, was admitted to the Scottish Disability Sport Hall of Fame last year for his achievements in Bowling. The award coincided with Scottish Disability Sport’s 50th anniversary last September.
David’s wife, Joey, keeps the trophy and scroll which marks David’s place in the Hall of Fame, along with the many other medals and awards the bowler picked up in his long bowling career.
David started playing bowls in Inverallochy, and was a regular bowler at the Fraserburgh Leisure Centre, Invercairn, Mintlaw and Aberdeen, where he also worked as a coach.
David competed in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where he won Gold, and the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta. He also became the British Indoor National Champion.
His prowess in bowling saw him travel all over the world, including to Australia, South Africa and Malaysia.
David was awarded an MBE in 2004 for bowling. He and Joey met the Queen three times.
The champion bowler even has a street named after him, Heddle Court in Fraserburgh.
For his day job, David worked as a filleter at Mac Fisheries. He and Joey married in 1965.
Commenting on the award from Scottish Disability Sport, Joey said: “I’m delighted, I’m over the moon. The day I found out about it I couldn’t believe it. He was well known and very well liked.”
