Two of Fraserburgh’s RNLI volunteers were awarded recently at the annual meeting of the Scottish Lifeboat Council, held at the Perth Concert Hall.

Sheila Souter and June Thomson, who run the local Fraserburgh RNLI shop were presented with the awards ‘RNLI Retail Supporter’.

Donald Christian the RNLI’s retail manager for Scotland explained that the RNLI Retail Supporter Award recognises the efforts of a particular RNLI shop, of which there are 22 in Scotland, that has achieved excellent results for the year.

Fraserburgh was nominated to recognise Sheila Souter’s and June Thomson’s dedication to the RNLI and to look at new ways in which to increase the shop’s sales.

Thanks to the work done by Ms Souter and Ms Thomson, the amount raised by the Fraserburgh shop has increased five-fold from 2006 to 2011, and looks set to increase yet again this
year.

This has been achieved by opening more often and for longer, changing the product displays and attending events away from the shop.

It was also announced by the Fraserburgh Lifeboat that this year’s open day, which was held in June, had raised a final total of over
£8,200.

The Lifeboat crew would like to thank everyone who helped to achieve this result, the support that everyone gives them in their work of saving lives at sea is greatly appreciated.

Just this week the crew were called out, on Tuesday, to assist the 24 metre training vessel Tectona in Fraserburgh Bay.

The yacht had become tail tied on a line from a marker buoy and, once on scene, the lifeboat stood by until members of the Tectona’s 14 man crew cleared the line and retrieved their anchor before resuming their passage to Peterhead.

It is hoped that the public will again give the crew a good response when they hold a fun run of 3, 5 or 10 kilometres on Sunday, October 14.

The RNLI Shop is located at the Lifeboat Station at Fraserburgh Harbour.
