Buchan apprentice gets surprise college award
AWARD: Alexander Buchan was awarded by surprise at Banff and Buchan College.
Alexander Buchan was awarded the Robertson’s Shield for Best Construction Student 2011-2012 at a surprise presentation last month.
Alexander, from Peterhead, was invited back to Banff and Buchan College on the pretext of reviewing his College work with his employers when he suddenly found himself centre stage.
The Shield and a £100 voucher were awarded by Mike Turner, Contracts Manager, Robertson Group.
Mr Turner said: “This is our second year of sponsoring this award and we are delighted to present this to Alex. His lecturers tell me that he continually displays a can do attitude in every aspect of his College and working life. Robertson’s has a strong relationship with the College and we are delighted, once again, to acknowledge emerging talent.”
Kevin Bruce, Curriculum Leader added: “Alex’s work had always been to a high standard. However what impressed all the lecturers, myself included, was his continual offers of help and the way that he always wanted to be busy, volunteering for additional tasks.”
Alex joined Banff and Buchan College on the General Building course in summer 2011. After Christmas he moved on to the Get Ready for Work programme, designed to develop employability skills and attitudes that employers look for during the recruitment process. A big part of this programme is the practical element, which combined with behavioural and classroom based objectives ensures that students are well placed to take advantage of future employment opportunities.
After just six weeks on the programme, Alex gained a placement and apprenticeship with Maskame and Tait, a joinery contractor based in Peterhead.
