Budding new pipe band on the march for new members

A NORTH-east pipe band has put out an appeal for new members - with no musical experience required.

Longhaven Pipe Band was formed in October of last year and Pipe Major Peter Craigmile told the Buchanie he was excited about it's future.

He said: "It's very small beginnings at the moment, we have just put up notices in local shops and are hoping for more publicity now.

"Basically we are looking for as many people to join as possible. We originally started up when myself and a few friends got together and decided to get something organised - we thought it would be fantastic to get something started up for people in the local area," he added.

Ambulance worker Peter has been piping for more than 26 years and was most-recently Pipe Major of Ellon. He said the Longhaven band was interested in people from all levels jsigning up.

He said: "We would like to hear from anyone who would like to learn and we are happy for novices to come along as we offer free tuition.

"Learners will start off on the chanter and within six months should have moved on the pipes. It would also great to get experienced musicians - we are particularly short of drummers.

"At the moment we have a loan of a fantastic drums - so now we just need the people to play them!

"I am hoping there will be people who are sat at home looking for the opportunity to join a local pipe band."

Peter told the Herald he hoped the band would get to the level that it could perform locally and eventually enter piping competitions.

Peter continued: "We are not in it to make money, but to promote the local piping industry. There have been many piping bands that have started out locally but then moved to Aberdeen. We would like to make this band local - and keep it local."

Longhaven Pipe Band practises every Monday evening from 7pm at Longhaven Public Hall, just south of Peterhead, and anyone keen to join or who would like more information can contact the group on their mobile 07876201734.
