Cairnbulg man raises over £1,100 for cancer charity

A Cairnbulg man has raised £1,170 for charity by organising a raffle in memory of his late brother, who died last year.

Andrew Harper used his carpentry skills to craft a wooden rocking motorbike and then sold tickets to raise funds for North-east urological cancer charity UCAN. The charity supported his brother, Paul, and his family after his prostate cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

Andrew decided to carve a motorcycle as his brother was a keen motorbike enthusiast. Andrew spent more than two months on the project.

Tickets were sold in local shops and the winning ticket belonged to Lorraine Noble from Fraserburgh, who has given the unique prize to her great-grandson, Flynn.

All of the money raised has been donated to UCAN, with half going to the UCAN Care Centre, based at Ward 44 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and the rest to UCAN’s latest fundraising campaign to fund the purchase of Scotland’s first Robotic-Assisted Surgical System (RASS) and two integrated operating theatres for ARI.

Andrew, who is a full-time carer for his wife Sandra, first became aware of UCAN when accompanying Paul to ARI for his treatment.

Commenting, Andrew said: “When I was with Paul up at the UCAN Care Centre I was able to see the great work the charity does and how it helps and supports people diagnosed with urological cancer. I came up with the idea to use my hobby of woodwork and carve something which I could then raffle and help raise some funds for this worthy cause.

“My brother was very much into motorbikes so it seemed very appropriate to make this wooden motorbike in his memory. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ian from R&S Dyga and Avril from Motor Parts for all their help in selling tickets, without their help we wouldn’t have been able to raise such a fantastic amount for UCAN.

“I would also like to thank everyone who purchased a raffle ticket. The money you have given will be put to great use by a very worthy charity.”
