Cemetery repairs to go ahead

Aberdeenshire Council has confirmed that long-awaited improvements to a cemetery carpark are to go ahead in the coming weeks.

A statement from the local authority said that repairs to the carpark at Invercairn Cemetery will finally go ahead, after years of campaigning for the upgrade by councillors and the local community.

In a statement, Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Roads and Landscape Services, Philip McKay, said: “Work is due to begin at Invercairn Cemetery in the coming weeks to improve drainage and the surface area of the car park.

“New gates have been installed at the cemetery in recent years and work has been carried out to narrow some of the headstone borders. Ongoing work at the cemetery includes the installation of headstone borders, and stabilisation of headstones which have become loose.”

Commenting, Councillor Charles Buchan said: “I am delighted that this long-awaited work is finally going ahead. The Herald featured me photographed standing in two inches of water in the car park a few months ago, when the Community Council and I got the Council to promise remediation of the car park surface. Cairnbulg and Inverallochy residents have been complaining about the state of the car park for at least 40 years, and the problem has been brought up many times by Invercairn Community Council. Because the surface of the car park was formed by the concrete of the wartime aerodrome, rain water accumulated inches deep on the surface, as there was no drainage, so people attending funerals had to wade though water to enter the cemetary, to the detriment of their footware, and comfort while at the graveside service.
