Classical star to make welcome return to Broch
Classical guitarist Ian Watt will be back performing in Fraserburgh this weekend.
The phenomenally talented, Fraserburgh-born, classical guitarist Ian Watt is making a welcome return to Fraserburgh – playing a concert at the United Reformed Church on Mid Street on Friday, September 10th, at 7.30pm.
Rev. Stephen Brown of the URC said he was 'delighted' to see Ian returning: "Fraserburgh folk should need no introduction to Ian and his music. He is a Broch lad who is making huge waves in the classical guitar world.
"Having come runner up in the televised competition series "Classical Star" and in a similar, prestigious competition in the USA, and having more recently won another competition in Germany, Ian has performed all over the world.
"His musical star is still rising far and fast.
"Ian is delighted to return to play a concert at Fraserburgh United Reformed Church. We can be assured of a stunning programme of moving and uplifting music," he said.
Tickets, priced 5, can be reserved by calling 513053 (evenings).
A limited number will be available on the door on the night. Buy or book early to avoid disappointment.
Since making his recital debut at the North of East Scotland Classical Guitar Society's inaugural concert in November 2005, Ian Watt has given many recitals and solo appearances throughout the United Kingdom, in venues such as St John's, Smith Square (London), the Queen Elizabeth Hall (South Bank Centre, London) and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, as well as major cultural festivals including the Dundee Guitar Festival and the Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Outside of the United Kingdom, Ian has performed in the USA, China, France, Holland, Belgium and Norway.
Regularly appearing as a concerto soloist, Ian has recently performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia and the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra.
In May 2009, he was awarded the silver medal at the Parkening International Guitar Competition in Malibu, at which he was the youngest competitor and in May 2010 won the 1st prize at the 'Westfalian Guitar Spring' International Competition in Germany.
As well as performing on BBC Radio, Ian was featured in a BBC 2 documentary which included a performance of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez.
Ian's endeavours into the performance of contemporary music have included collaborations with Scottish composers John Mcleod, Gordon McPherson, Rory Boyle and John Maxwell Geddes.
In March 2010, he premiered John Mcleod's Guitar Concerto, the composer's first work for the instrument, in Edinburgh.
In November 2009, Ian took part in the Peter Maxwell Davies 75th birthday celebration concerts in Glasgow, giving a performance of the rarely heard 'Dark Angels' song cycle for voice and guitar in the composer's presence.
