Banff and Buchan College and Volunteer Centre Aberdeenshire have joined forces to promote volunteering within the college and wider community, signing a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’.

Banff and Buchan College has invited Volunteer Centre Aberdeenshire (VCA) to relocate their Fraserburgh office to the campus, from which VCA will offer its services to students, staff, the students association and the wider public.

“Together we will work towards encouraging volunteering and developing volunteering opportunities,“ says David Hekelaar, convener, VCA.

He continues: “Our development officer, Rhona Davidson, is now based at the college four days a week. Volunteering is what makes things happen in communities, without the gift of individuals’ time, community facilities wouldn’t exist – from mountain rescue and lifeboats to school clubs and charity shops, and everything in between, there are many ways to volunteer.”

Paul Sherrington, principal of Banff and Buchan College, added: “Volunteering plays an important part in the lives of individuals and communities. We have introduced a new qualification, the Scottish Qualification Authority Award in Employability, which is designed to develop and enhance employability skills and to recognize more fully the contribution of the volunteer in the workplace.

“In a challenging jobs market volunteering provides a valuable way for learners to use their skills and maintain their confidence and self-esteem”.

VCA is a charity registered with the Scottish Charity Regulator and a company limited by guarantee. It is supported by grants from the Scottish Government and Aberdeenshire Council. Further information can be found at www.vcaberdeenshire.org.uk or contact north@vcaberdeenshire.org.uk
