A new week long course, designed and offered by Banff and Buchan College and the Job Centre, is providing a stepping stone into employment for Aberdeenshire residents who are currently looking for work.

The Construction Skills Certification course offers those interested in entering the Construction industry the opportunity to obtain or refresh skills and behaviours that employers are looking for plus gain a recognised qualification – the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card.

Kevin Bruce, Curriculum Leader for Construction says: “The CSCS Card is a very visible way to demonstrate that you have the skills to work on a construction site. It tells employers that the holder has the required Health and Safety knowledge to operate at a certain level. More and more employers are looking for this so it really improves the employment prospects of anyone wishing to enter construction.”

He continues: “The course provides a full day site induction covering working at heights, manual handling and power sources. The balance of the week simulates working on a construction site and covers teamwork and organisational skills which are crucial in working for any business. At the end of the five day course each candidate is required to sit a Health and Safety assessment and the CSCS Card is awarded upon successful completion.”

Anyone interested should contact their local Job Centre. The College will in the future be exploring the options of offering more levels of CSCS training as well as offering the independent test facility externally to interested employers.
