Two Fraserburgh fashion students, Zara Tait (19) and April Buchan (20), who attend Aberdeen College, modelled their own creations last week at the most glamourous night in the college calendar.

Zara and April, are both students in first year of their HND Fashion and Textiles course, so this year’s fashion show was a debut opportunity for them to show off their garments to friends and family, as well as embrace the glamorous side of fashion.

The annual end of term show, held at college’s Gallowgate Centre on Thursday June 9, saw the students strut their stuff on the catwalk modelling creations that they both designed and made themselves.

Featured in the show were creations based on various themes to inspire their work that include ‘Mademoiselle’, symbolising feminine, vintage tastes and bohemian styling of 1930’s Paris.

Another theme was ‘Wood Nymph’ which allowed investigation of colours, surfaces and textures of the forest floor, trees, plants and flowers as well as being inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘A Mid Summer Night’s Dream’.

For students who did not want to embrace the ethereal side of fashion, the theme of ‘Industrial’ which inspired a more grungy, urban style with rusted and deconstructed styling based on disintegrating scrap metal and hard edged structure has proven popular and ‘Savile Row’ suited the more sharp styling and tailoring of the City with a twist of 1960’s ‘Mod’ London Culture.

Describing this year’s event, Art & Design curriculum leader Janice Scott said: “We’re incredibly excited about this year’s fashion show.

“The students have designed and created some truly stunning pieces with a real emphasis on texture, details and embellishments on their garments to express their chosen theme.

“We are very proud of the way the students have interpreted the themes this year and I think our guests will be very impressed.”

The show was in aid of the Barnardos’ charity with the second year students undertaking the ‘Design for Life’ project to revamp discarded textiles and transfer these into costumes based on themes of ‘Antique’ and ‘Greenhouse’ promoting historical style and sustainability of the environment.
