Community council chairman appeals for new members

THE chairman of Fraserburgh Community Council has urged local people to stand for election to the civic group.

Ronnie McNab is particularly keen to see younger people join the first tier of Scottish local government.

"We are looking for younger volunteers to take on the role of community councillor," he said.

"Following the success of the Junior Wardens scheme which has been terrific, I think it would be great to see some younger faces on the council."

Such has been the Junior Wardens success that it is now being expanded into other areas.

"I understand that a number of local communities, such as Strichen and Maud are keen to have it introduced and that local businesses are getting behind it," he added.

Mr McNab explained that nomination forms for the election were available at Banff and Buchan College, Fraserburgh Library and the academy.

"People have until June 14 to get their nominations in," he explained.

At the community council's Annual General Meeting, Mr McNab was re-elected as chairman.

He admitted: "I am delighted that the members of the council have voted me back in. It is my third year as chairman and I hope it is a sign that I am doing well."

Mr McNab added that after 40 years as a community councillor he felt that it was a very worthwhile role and hoped younger people would take up the challenge.

The full list of office bearers are: chairman Ronnie McNab; vice-chairman Mary Melville; secretary Jim Page; minutes secretary Kathleen Kemp; treasurer Johnny Lovegrove.
