Community hall plan for burnt out St Combs facility
AMBITIOUS plans are being formulated to build a state-of-the-art community hall in St Combs to replace the former building destroyed by fire last year.
Campaigners within the small coastal village are determined that work should start on a new facility as soon as possible.
Their efforts to have a new community hall built in St Combs took a considerable step forward following a consulation day for villagers recently organised by the hall and activities committee.
Two sessions were held at the Kirkie recently which attracted 96 local folk and which were described "as very positive" by the organisers.
A spokeswoman said "All in all, it was a positive consultation and one which will now enable the committee to meet with their architects, put forward the public's ideas and have a final set of plans prepared for submission to the planning department.
"The new hall will happen, and from the point of view of the locals, the sooner the better.
"We hope to have the funding in place by early autumn and, fingers-crossed, we would like to break ground before the end of the year."
Teas, sandwiches and home bakes were provided to the villagers who were brave enough to venture out on such a cold snowy day.
Members of the committee were on hand to answer any questions regarding the proposed new hall along with members of the Buchan Development Partnership who kindly volunteered their assistance.
The spokeswoman continued: "Local people were asked to put forward their ideas by way of a questionnaire. The committee were overwhelmed and pleased to see such a high turnout.
"This was an information day with locals chatting to not only the committee but also each other, sharing their comments and making very usual suggestions regarding the new hall, its layout and the type of facilities and clubs they would like to see put in place," she added.
Apart from the clubs and groups which were already using the hall, fresh suggestions included a larger function and sports hall to enable a bowling club to be formed, a tea bar, youth clubs, regular junior discos, possibly a workout room or gym, improved catering facilities, additional toilets and showers and even a multi-purpose leisure room with windows overlooking the football pitch.
"The committee have taken on board all suggestions and will endeavour to accommodate as many as possible within the new plans," said the spokeswoman.
"Once the new hall is complete, the committee have agreed to work along with and assist individuals and volunteers in the setting up of new groups and clubs."
In the meantime, the committee has decided to go ahead with this year's gala, albeit on a slightly smaller scale than usual, on Saturday, June 26.
"The committee would like to thank everybody for attending the consultation and putting forward some excellent ideas and suggestions," concluded the spokeswoman.
