Banff and Buchan College recently staged an ‘X Factor’ style cooking competition with students from the Towards Independence Group.

The six students worked alongside members of the SENCA (Supported Education Needs Classroom Assistant) team to create three dishes, which were then tasted and judged by the Cook Factor
judges.

Carlyn Gorski and Robbie Williamson worked with Shirley Anderson to make an Eve’s pudding, Tom Marchant and Alisanne Lyon worked with Aileen Watt to make a fruits of the forest cheesecake, and Mark McBeath and William Kidd worked with Nikki Johnstone and Derek Thomson to create an apple pie.

The Cook Factor judges were Louis (Neil Cowie), Tulisa (Jean Ritchie), Cheryl (Susan Dubios) and Simon (Paul Sherrington).

The dishes were judged in three categories: taste, presentation and texture, on a scale of one to three, with one being poor and three being excellent.

All of the contestant groups scored full points, in all categories.

Jim Saunders, Supported Education Manager, said: “The Cook Factor aimed to showcase all the contestants’ talents. They have developed communication skills, cooking skills and presentation skills.”

Principle Paul Sherrington enjoyed the Cook Factor immensely, saying: “The Cook Factor is an extremely effective way to not only build the confidence of the students, but to promote themselves and the College in a positive way. The Cook Factor was a great success and a credit to all of those involved, especially the
students.”

The second round of the Cook Factor is in the pipeline, with rumoured savoury dishes being showcased by the contestants.
