Councillor calls for urgent dunes clean-up

PEOPLE in Fraserburgh are being urged to join a mammoth dune cleaning operation.

The call to arms has been issued by Councillor Brian Topping who believes that the debris and rubbish strewn among Fraserburgh's dunes is a "disgrace" and that those responsible for it should feel "ashamed".

Speaking exclusively to the Herald, he said: "I am very very angry, upset and disappointed about this. The fact that people can leave cans and bottles lying there. I have seen a lot of this; broken bottles, where people have been out drinking and having barbecues during the recent good weather."

The Broch councillor said he understood people's desire to enjoy the weather and relax, but urged them to tidy up after the event.

"There are bins along the Beach Promenade, but people are leaving their rubbish. As well as the material that is being washed up that has come off boats, such as a batch of black detergent drums recently, we also have broken glass left in the dunes. People should be ashamed of themselves," he said.

He labelled the lack of care over the local environment as "disgraceful", adding: "We have three miles of lovely golden sand here in Fraserburgh. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland.

"But the broken glass is disgraceful. Somebody or someone's pet could easily be injured. It is totally and utterly thoughtless," he said.

Councillor Topping's response to discovering so much potentially dangerous debris when he was out walking his dog has also been to issue a call for local people to act.

"I am arranging a dune clean. We have had beach cleans before and many organisations have played their part.

"I have already got permission to station two skips down there for this event. One will be near the old railway line and the other at the end of the Promenade," he said.

The idea will be to provide volunteers with the necessary equipment, including gloves and black bags and to sweep an area running alongside the beach, from the children's play area to Tiger Hill.

"We have a provisional date in June, which is still to be confirmed. My hope is that dog lovers, individuals and community groups will all want to come along," he said.

He added that he had also contacted the Police and Community Wardens about his concerns and plans.

In addition, Councillor Topping has already been in consultation with council officials to see if arrangements can be made to have the a former pill box cleared of both old cables, debris and broken glass.

"I was there again on Tuesday morning and it looks as if the council workmen have already started clearing the wiring. The whole idea is that we want to encourage people to enjoy the environment and not to spoil it. The simply message is - take your rubbish home," he added.
