Councillor pushes for school patroller

A Fraserburgh and District councillor is pushing to have a crossing patroller installed at a busy Broch road.
Councillor Ian Tait hopes a relief patroller will be employed for a trial period after the Easter holidays to help schoolchildren cross Boothby Road.
He believes a trial period could help to justify emloying a permanent patroller to council officials. Commenting, Councillor Tait said: “The officers have informed me that the results of the recent pedestrian surveys that I asked for still do not justify putting in a patroller because the number of pedetrians crossing still did not meet the council’s standard.
“However, I believe many parents are not allowing their children to walk to school when they have to cross that very busy road and that may be why there is less usage than there would be in reality. I have asked council officers to look at the prospect of running a trial for two to three weeks following the Easter Holidays whereby a relief crossing patroller would man the crossing point for a time. During the trial period, I will ask parents to use the crossing to its fullest extent so that new surveys can be done which give a realistic measurement of pedestrians crossing.”
Cllr Tait continued: “This proposal would be a departure from the council’s normal procedure. However, the officers have assured me that they will discuss the matter with the relevant agencies inside the council to try to get support for this trial.
“It is just a pity that the recent surveys did not meet the council’s normal criteria for the number of pedetrians crossing.
“However, I am determined to try everything I can and I believe this trial period gives us the best chance of success to meet the council’s standards.”
