Couple killed and infant seriously injured in crash
A FRASERBURGH couple died and their two-year-old daughter remains in hospital in Aberdeen following an early morning road accident on the Peterhead to Fraserburgh road near Cortes.
Vladimir Ruhno (34), and Karina Lukjanska (38), both from Fraserburgh, died when their green Vauxhall Frontera left the A90 Peterhead to Fraserburgh road and overturned at Cortes at 1.15am on Sunday morning.
Their seriously-injured two-year-old daughter remains in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in a stable condition.
Grampian Police units along with Grampian Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service attended, however, the couple were pronounced deceased at the scene. The road was closed for around seven hours while collision investigators examined the scene.
Vladimir and Karina have been resident in the Fraserburgh area for five years after moving to Scotland from Estonia and Latvia respectively.
Shortly after the road was re-opened on the Sunday, a 37-years-old motorist was seriously injured when his car was in collision with a lorry at Philorth.
The man, named locally as Polish national Zdzislaw Kilian, remains in a serious condition in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The male lorry driver did not require hospital treatment.
Grampian Police roads policing Inspector Ewan Innes said: "We would like to express the sympathies of the entire force to the families of the victims. We are currently making enquiries to determine what may have caused this collision.
"These enquires are at a very early stage - we have, however, established that Vladimir and Karina had been in the Peterhead area prior to the collision and were driving home from there.
"We'd ask that anyone who may have seen the green Vauxhall Frontera in the Peterhead area prior to the collision, or anyone who can remember seeing the vehicle being driven on the A90 at that time to contact us as soon as possible."
A spokesman for the families said: "They are devastated by this tragedy - they want to be left in privacy to grieve and come to terms with this immense loss."
Ms Lukjanska's other daughter, Katerina is a part-time waitress at the B-Raj Tandoori Restaurant in Fraserburgh.
Her employer, Baldev Soni, told the Herald: "Katerina is a lovely girl, a well-liked member of staff, and everyone was shocked and saddened by this. Our thoughts and condolences are with her and her family just now."
Inspector Innes said: "Weather conditions have been very poor in the Buchan area over the weekend with many routes affected by snow. Clearly road and weather conditions at the time of both collisions will be taken into account during our enquiries."
Anyone who has any information relating to the incident should contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5700 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where calls can be treated anonymously.
