Double success for Banff and Buchan welding students

Two students who are working towards a Modern apprenticeship in Welding and Fabrication at Banff and Buchan College have again excelled in the regional heat of the prestigious BOC Welder Scotland competition.

After competing in an internal competition, the top three students from the college – Jonathan Daniel of Dales Engineering, Craig Boardman of Score and Scott Lawson were chosen to go forward and compete in the regional competition in Dundee.

It was a particularly proud achievement for Scott who has only been practicing welding since September last year when he joined college from school.

Jonathan and Craig were delighted to take first place and second place respectively in the regional competition and will now go on to the National Finals in Fife.

Ronnie Cowie, Curriculum Head of Welding and Motor Vehicle training at the college said: “I am delighted that our students have dominated this competition again. I must also congratulate Scott for achieving this level of welding in the short time he has been attending college.

“Welding is a complex and highly skilled technology, to carry this out at such a high level requires great skill and motivation, these three students have proven to have this, it’s an outstanding achievement”

Kevin Thomson, Operations Director at Dales Engineering Services Limited, said : “Once again Jonathon’s achievement highlights the talent we are capable of consistently producing in the north east, especially considering he went one better this year and won the regional heats.

“We wish him luck in the national final, and have every confidence he will put in a performance himself, Dales and the college will be proud of”.

Wullie Forman, Training/Assistant Apprentice Co-Ordinator at Score, said: “We are delighted that Craig has once again achieved entry to the national final to compete amongst the top welding apprentices in Scotland.

“Craig is a great asset to Score due to the hard work, commitment and dedication of himself, his mentors and the welding instructors of BBCFE. We wish Craig and Jonathan every success, reaching the final has proven that they already have the necessary skills to be Scotland’s top apprentices.”
