Former golf champ celebrates 80 years

A former Fraserburgh golf champion is celebrating his 80th birthday.

Albert Ogston, or Bert, as he is better known, is 80 years old today (Thursday January 31). Bert has lived in Fraserburgh all of his life.

Bert was 19 when he won the Fraserburgh Golf Club Championship for two years running, sixty years ago, in 1952 and 1953. Bert won the Juvenile and Junior competitions and before becoming the youngest person to win the Senior competition. He held the Fraserburgh course record for 10 years - a record which was never broken as the course was subsequently changed. Bert shot a score of 67.

Having served his engineering apprenticeship with Pirie Engineers in Fraserburgh, Bert then joined the RAF for two years of National Service.

When Bert returned he started a career in the fishing industry, firstly on the Dayspring then the Hazael. He then bought and skippered his own boat, Strathbeg FR 202, following on to the Silver Crest, Sharon Rose and Eshcol. Bert worked as a fisherman until his retirement in 1997.

Bert now lists working on his computer and photography as two of his hobbies.

Commenting on his golfing achievements, Bert said: “It was great, being the youngest. Jack Pressley won it before me and he was a great friend of mine.

“I didn’t play golf when I was away at sea but I went back to it many years after that.

“I’m celebrating my birthday with my family. I’m looking forward to it.”

Agnes who has been married to Bert for 51 years, their daughter Roslyn, son-in-law Tony, son Albert, daughter-in-law Morag and grandchildren Madison and Samuel would all like to wish Bert a happy 80th birthday.
