The North of Scotland regional final of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Senior Team Challenge took place at the International School, Aberdeen, recently.

The Fraserburgh Academy team consisted of Jack Reid, Andrej Ladcenko, Neil Robertson and Emily Noble.

The team worked extremely hard during the day on a range of challenging mathematical tasks, placing first.

State and Independent schools from across Grampian, Highland and Angus attended, with each school brought a team of two S5s and two S6s.

In the first round, they were working on questions in a group, and then in the second round they split into ‘across’ and ‘down’ pairs to work on a cross-number puzzle. In the final round they stayed in their pairs for a mini-relay, passing answers between pairs.

It was a closely-fought contest, with the schools finishing in the top 3 places given certificates:
1st - Fraserburgh Academy;
2nd - Albyne School;
3rd - Kingston Grammar School.

After the event, Mr Bovill, faculty head of mathematics at Fraserburgh Academy, said: “I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed the Senior Team Maths Challenge today at the International School – it was superbly run and the range of problems was excellent.

“I am very proud of our first-class team.”
